ceramics

My first medium was photography, so my ceramics begin in two dimensions, referencing shapes and forms found in photographs. I make preliminary sketches, determine the scale of the piece, and often create templates. Hand building with clay suits my way of making three-dimensional objects. I start with simple forms and a simple palette then advance into more complex combinations of surfaces and color. With each new piece, I move the shapes and forms forward so that I’m not making the same piece over and over. With clay, the possibilities are endless. Objects should be interesting to look at and evoke thought. When people look at my ceramics, I’d like them to see all the aspects I’m trying to express: form, function and uniqueness. My pieces are for living. I intend them to be calming, pleasing and useful.
